Cari tutti,
vi ricordiamo l'incontro SMeet di venerdi` 14 Marzo 2025 alle ore 11:30, IN PRESENZA in aula Campisano, sede CNR-IMM.
Il meeting prevede:
* Titolo: The KM3NeT-ARCA, the largest undersea particle physics detector
* Speaker: Dott. Giorgio Riccobene - Primo Ricercatore INFN
* Chair:Dott. Fabio Matera - CNR-IMM
* Abstract:
The KM3NeT-ARCA is the largest undersea particle physics detector, aiming at the detection of cosmic high-energy neutrinos. Neutrino astronomy offers a unique exploration into astrophysical phenomena: high-energy neutrinos can be produced when ultra-relativistic cosmic-ray protons or nuclei interact with other matter or photons, in astrophysical sources or during their journey in the Universe. Neutrinos are electrically neutral and quasi-massless, interacting only by means of the weak interaction: they are not deflected by magnetic fields and they are rarely absorbed by interstellar matter. Therefore, they can provide information on high -energy far universe and insight of the core of the astrophysical sources.
In 2022 KM3NeT reached about 1/8 of its final size, and in February 2023 an exceptionally high-energy event was observed associated with a cosmic neutrino detection. Namely a muon with an estimated energy of 120 PeV was identified, likely originated by a 220 PeV neutrino.
KM3NeT and the subsea infrastructures of INFN-LNS have paramount impact also in deep sea exploration and monitoring of the Mediterranean S ea.
The status of KM3NeT and joint Earth and sea science projects will be discussed.
Vi aspettiamo numerosi.
Saluti.
