After uninstallation of pre-installed MS Office 365 version on a laptop and a new installation of  MS Office 2016 an activation screen in still prompted. 

To resolve the issue:

• Uninstall Office 365 trial edition.
• Uninstall the "Get Office" app.
• Reboot.
• Install Office Standard volume license edition.
• Started Word to verify the trial version Activation Popup
• If it does, export and delete the following key in the registry:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\OEM
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\OEM
• Start Word again and problem solved with popup gone!
